A man, a plan, a canal, Panama! Lots to do in the wonderful country of Panama. Highlights are the canal, birding, fishing, beaches and a great place to retire as an expat. Bustling Panama City is a wonder to behold with vibrant nightlife and fine dining, but don't miss out on Panama Viejo which reminds me of a mini Cartegena. Another incredible aspect of Panama City is the excellent wildlife and birding right in the city limits at Metropolitan Park. My favorite resort for a nature retreat is the Gamboa Rainforest Resort which gives access to a large resort property near the excellent birdwatching and wildlife viewing on Pipeline Road with opportunities for boat-watching on the canal. While there are a myriad of choices of traditional cruises leaving from the U.S. or Latin America that transit the Panama Canal, you can also choose a half or full day cruise from Panama City on the Pacific Queen. Be sure to research the options in advance as full transit canal cruises were limited to once a month when we sailed. Beach options abound on the mainland but for something special, head to Bocas del Toro for super affordable beachfront accommodations at Akwaba Lodge, a chill retreat at Red Frog Beach Resort or splash out for luxe overwater bungalow private island experience at Nayara Bocas del Toro. Adventurous travelers should consider flying over to the Pearl Islands for affordable secluded beach experiences. Looking for a super affordable but lush mountain retreat with quirky boutique hotels and outdoor experiences or want to retire on a small pension? Check out Boquete in the Panama highlands. Panama is great for both budget or luxury travel or everything in between. Send me a message to start planning your Panama adventure! xoxo Rebekah
